Don’t Fight The Shadows

A poem for the times when God’s people find themselves walking in the dark:

Don’t fight the shadows
My child
When they fall on your way
Obscuring the warmth and
The light of the day

When they cause you to shiver
And stumble
And grope
When they cause you to question
Your reasons
For hope

Don’t fight the shadows
My dear one
Your fists are too small
Let them fall
You can’t win
The shadows will come
Let them darken your skin

Let them darken your eyes
You can’t stop them
My child
But somewhere inside you
Hold on to the light
Hold on and remember
Hold on and hold tight
To the hand of the
Shepherd who led you to night

Who led you with purpose
Who knows the way right
Hold on to his hand
Child
Hold on
And hold tight

He knows what he’s doing
He knows where he’s going
He knows what he’s growing
Inside of your heart

On the road to the morning
Of glorious day
The valley of shadow
Is part of the way
It can’t be passed over
It must be passed through
But there is a Shepherd
Who goes there with you

Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I fear no evil, for You are with me; Your rod and Your staff, they comfort me.” – Psalm 23:4
